Peruvian destinations are not only ideal for different tourist activities, but they are also perfect settings for film productions. Actors and directors from all over the world have been fascinated by the country's locations, which provide mystical and traditional atmospheres. Here we present a selection of five films, between classics and contemporary, with which you can learn more about the cultural diversity that Peru has to offer.
1. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
On their journey through South America, with the aim of crossing the Andes, Che Guevara (Gael García Bernal) and Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) passed through national scenarios such as the Peruvian rainforest, villages in Cajamarca or the imposing Machu Picchu, in Cusco. Precisely, this last destination was considered by the protagonist as one of the greatest manifestations of culture in this part of the continent.
2. Secret of the Incas (1954)
The legendary Charlton Heston, along with Robert Young, Nicole Maurey and the incomparable Yma Súmac arrived in Peru, specifically in Cusco, to film this production. The protagonist Harry Steele (Heston) is in search of the lost gold of the Incas, so he must immerse himself in an adventure through this ancient culture to try to find the treasure.
3. Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019)
The plot of this film, starring Isabela Moner, is based on the Inca culture, making reference to destinations in Cusco, such as Machu Picchu. In addition, the actress said that she learned a little Quechua, the native language of the aforementioned civilization, to play the character. Furthermore, the National University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas, is also mentioned.
4. Fitzcarraldo (1982)
Brian Fitzgerald's (Klaus Kinski) dream is to build a theater in the Amazon rainforest. In order to get the fortune that will allow him to get closer to his goal, he decides to explore this destination, while, at the same time, he enters the rubber business. Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado were the locations used by the director Werner Herzog, who considers this production one of his greatest challenges.
5. Cabo Blanco (1980)
Starring the well-remembered Charles Bronson, this production immerses a group of adventurers in a journey along the coast of Peru, specifically, in the balneario of Talara in Piura. Giff Hoyt (Bronson), who has a bar in this destination, will follow the clues of a treasure hidden by the Nazis, while confronting ex-combatants of this faction.

All the splendor of Cusco and San Martin will be brought to the big screen with the premiere of the aforementioned film in mid-2023. Machu Picchu, the Andes Mountains or La Unión waterfall, are some of the scenarios that captured the world's attention with the launching of the film's trailer, which will also show the cultural diversity of Peru.
